Meetings with peter
The move to include non-Jews in the early days of Christian mission was difficult.
As Gentiles began to convert from Paganism to Christianity, an issue arose among Christian leaders. The issue as to whether or not Gentiles needed to observe all the tenets of the Law of Moses. In particular, it was debated whether Gentile converts needed to be circumcised or observe the dietary laws; circumcision especially being considered repulsive in Hellenistic culture .
This problem arose was when some Christians coming from Judea claimed their freedom acquired in Christ Jesus (cf. Gal. 2:4). The community decided to consult the Apostles and Elders of Jerusalem.
The Assembly confirmed the main leaders of the Church and recognised the missionary vocation of Peter for the circumcised and that of Paul for the uncircumcised.
Peter had a vision that made him realise that Christianity couldn't continue if people had to be circumcised. To prove that gentiles should be accepted he baptised Corneluis who became the first gentile converts to Christianity after God delivered individual messages to both Peter and Paul.
